Book Review: What is the Gospel?

Updated: Feb 23, 2023

When asked “What is the center of your faith?” Every Christian I know would at least mention the gospel in their answer. That’s good! After all, they would be correct because the gospel is (or at least should be) the center of the our faith as a Christians. Unfortunately, I would venture to say that most people who proclaim to believe in the gospel of Jesus Christ would also have a very hard time articulating what it is. While we may hit on some of its points, even points that are correct, we would inevitably forget something or beat around the bush, without exactly beating the bush. In his book, written as part of the IX Marks series, Greg Gilbert aims to answer the question “What is the Gospel?”

In this book, Gilbert walks readers through the specifics of the gospel in the Bible along with detailing the four major points he emphasizes earlier as the gospel pillars: God, man, Christ, and response. Gilbert does an excellent job of using real life stories and experiences to draw the reader in and to understand his evaluation of the gospel. Using scripture as the ultimate authority, his definition is easy to understand, simple, and helpful.

“That’s how the Bible talks about the depth of our sin – it is in us and of us, not just on us.” What is the Gospel, page 54

Overall, I wish I would have read this book earlier on life. This little book would have helped me build a base for my faith and start taking major strides much earlier in my life. I would certainly recommend this to any young christian, specifically in their high school or college years. I would also recommend this book to anyone who is a non-believer or trying to nail down exactly what it is they believe spiritually. If you are a seasoned Christian, this book is all about your favorite story, so it wouldn’t hurt to take a few hours and let God remind you of his gospel.
